Privacy notice.
SPOKE is a closed-beta tennis matchmaking service for Sydney's North Shore. We collect the minimum information needed to verify members are real humans and connect them with suitable hitting partners. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
What we collect
When you join SPOKE, we collect:
- Identity information — your name, email, mobile, and suburb. Used to contact you and match you with players in your area.
- Government ID and a live selfie — collected and verified by Stripe Identity (see below). SPOKE never sees or stores the ID document itself.
- Tennis profile — your level, preferred play style, age range, and gender preference for hitting partners. Used solely to match you with suitable players.
- Match activity — open calls you post, players you've matched with, and messages exchanged through the app.
Identity verification by Stripe
SPOKE uses Stripe Identity to verify every member is a real, identifiable person. When you sign up, you'll be asked to provide a government-issued photo ID (driver licence or passport) and take a short selfie video. Stripe matches these and confirms your identity.
SPOKE receives only a verified / not verified result from Stripe, along with your name and date of birth. The ID document and selfie are processed by Stripe under their own privacy terms and are not retained by SPOKE.

Why we collect it
- To verify you're a real human — preventing fake profiles, bots, and bad actors
- To match you with suitable players — by level, location, age, and gender preference
- To enable communication — chat with matched players to arrange hits
- To improve the service — anonymous, aggregated usage data to understand what works
Who we share with
We share your information only with:
- Stripe — for identity verification and (from August 2026) payment processing
- Other SPOKE members — your first name, photo, level, and suburb are visible to members you've explicitly matched with or invited to your circle
- Service providers — hosting, email, and analytics partners who help operate the service (under strict confidentiality)
We do not sell, rent, or share your information for advertising, marketing, or any other commercial purpose.
What stays private
- Your circle is yours alone — no other member can see who is in your inner circle
- If you pass on a player request, the player is not notified
- If you remove someone from your circle, they are not notified
- We never publish ratings, rankings, or activity feeds about you
How long we keep it
We keep your profile information for as long as you have an active SPOKE account, plus 90 days after you delete your account (for fraud prevention and dispute resolution).
Government ID images are not stored by SPOKE — they are processed by Stripe and deleted from Stripe's systems according to Stripe's data retention policy.
Your rights
Under the Australian Privacy Principles (Privacy Act 1988), you have the right to:
- Access your personal information held by SPOKE
- Correct any inaccurate information
- Delete your account and associated data
- Complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au if you believe we've mishandled your information

Cookies and tracking
The SPOKE website (spoketennis.com) does not use third-party tracking cookies, advertising pixels, or behavioural analytics. The SPOKE app uses minimal first-party storage to keep you signed in and remember your preferences. We do not track you across other websites.
Security
SPOKE uses industry-standard encryption (HTTPS) for all data in transit. Identity documents are handled by Stripe under their PCI DSS and SOC 2 compliant infrastructure. Member data is stored in encrypted databases with access restricted to authorised SPOKE personnel only.

Changes to this notice
We may update this privacy notice as SPOKE evolves. Material changes will be communicated to active members by email at least 14 days before they take effect.
